Style features
To design a kitchen in a Mediterranean style, consider its main differences:
- Lack of artsy furniture.
- Natural materials, texture and even scuffs.
- Functionality, simplicity and comfort.
- National elements of decor.
Color spectrum
The main varieties of the Mediterranean direction are considered Greek style and Italian (or Spanish). From here originates the color scheme of the kitchen.
In the "Greek" style, the main shades are cold - white, blue, saturated or deep blue. The palette is diluted with bright details of red or lemon color, as well as warm wood tones. Thanks to the accents, the interior is sunny, light and fresh, bringing an atmosphere of relaxation on the coast.
The combination of white and blue reproduces not only the colors of the Greek flag, but also the famous landscapes of Santorini with whitewashed buildings and blue roofs.
The "Italian" style is rich in a warm color palette: orange, sand, yellow and olive shades. Wood is used more often than in Greek interiors, giving the atmosphere warmth and coziness. Also in the design of the Mediterranean cuisine black details, a little gold and copper are appropriate.
Kitchen furniture and appliances
The dining table acts as the center of the room, uniting the whole family, guests or even several generations. In the spacious dining room, a large round wooden table will look great. Around it you can place comfortable chairs of simple shapes - often several types of designs are mixed, including antique and wicker ones, to bring elements from different eras into the decor. Kitchen corners are not commonly used.
If a small kitchen is designed in the Mediterranean style, you can replace the large table with a transformer from solid pine, which will be laid out from time to time.
The working area is usually functional and convenient. Open shelves are welcome on which the necessary utensils are located. A kitchen set can be made up of several separate items, combining in style: this will make the atmosphere unique. The facades are decorated with moldings, and the surface is chosen exclusively matte, without a glossy sheen.
Alas, modern household appliances in the interior of the kitchen do not combine well with the Mediterranean style: it is desirable that the microwave, blender and crock-pot are mostly hidden from view. The refrigerator and stove are selected in retro style - this way they give the kitchen a special touch.
Finishing and materials
To design a Mediterranean-themed kitchen, you don’t have to invest a lot. It’s easy to save on finishing without aligning the walls and ceiling: embossing is the hallmark of the style. Sometimes defects and negligence are specially added using textured plaster. To expand the small kitchen, you can stick on the wall murals with a picture of the sea landscape.
An apron, which is decorated with aged ceramic tiles, often becomes a decoration of the working area. This can be either a medium-sized product or a mosaic.Especially appreciated are tiles with original patterns or hand-painted thematic ornaments. It is not forbidden to lay tiles with chips and scuffs.
In addition, stone and brickwork are often used in wall decoration. Texture is welcome in everything, including the design of the ceiling, which is simply plastered and painted white. The ceiling can be decorated with contrasting wooden beams or boards painted in the same color.
Mediterranean cuisine is usually tiled with warm colors. Terracotta color is a priority, it visually gives the interior warmth, which can not be said about tactile sensations. In our climate, it is better to lay underfloor granite system.
Wood flooring is rare, but if the owner prefers this material, a good imitation of an aged board is suitable. In the kitchen, the floor must be protected from moisture and dirt, and a high-class laminate will be the solution in this situation.
Which curtains are suitable?
Southern-style kitchens use little textile. You will not see multi-tiered curtains here - only light curtains made of natural fabrics: cotton and linen. Laconic rolled curtains look good. Ornaments on matter are usually plain - a strip, a cell. Lace or tulle to enter into the Mediterranean cuisine is not easy, but with special desire it is possible.
Especially luxurious on the windows look the internal shutters - they will definitely become the highlight of the interior.
Decor and lighting
The Mediterranean style in the interior of the kitchen suggests the presence of multi-level lighting, especially in our country, where there is little sunlight. For general lighting, florid chandeliers, pendant lamps in a country style, lanterns are suitable. The walls can be decorated with wrought iron sconces. Lighting devices are usually made of metal, wooden elements are appropriate. Under the ceiling, fixtures made of colored glass bottles look interesting.
Decor plays an important role in the design of Mediterranean cuisine. Tableware, as a rule, stands on open shelves and sideboards, and devices hang on rails, creating the effect of living. Such a kitchen, as it were, says that they love to cook deliciously here and are always waiting for guests.
Thanks to the coarse linen tablecloths and lace napkins, the Mediterranean-style kitchen looks cozy and homely, and soft pillows serve as a pleasant addition during family gatherings.
The table is decorated with fresh flowers and fruits, window sills - with green plants in clay pots. Paintings with rural landscapes can be hung on the walls. But the decor is important to maintain balance: often the room becomes too full of details - for example, painted tiles in combination with an abundance of dishes can overload the kitchen.
Kitchen-living room interior
To recreate the Mediterranean style, spacious rooms are more suitable: it is easier to bring air and light here. In addition, original gizmos here are definitely enough space. But if the apartment cannot boast of free space, it makes sense to combine the kitchen and the room, creating a cozy living room for a pleasant pastime.
To give the interior of the apartment a rural touch, the living room is decorated with a decorative fireplace. The main element is a soft sofa, designed to accommodate all households.
As seats in the living room, soft or wicker chairs are used. The kitchen can be combined with the dining room or zoned using a sofa, catwalk or partitions.
