General rules for wall decor
Consider the principle of proportionality: large-scale objects are suitable for spacious rooms where there is enough space to view them from afar. In small living rooms it is better to arrange a composition of many small items.
One tiny object will be lost on the wall and will look ridiculous, and a work of art wider than the sofa will make the furniture invisible. Besides the decorative function, decorations change the geometry of space. Arrange a vertical composition to increase the height of the ceilings and balance too high ceilings. Elongated horizontal paintings and panels of posters visually expand the space.
Overall picture
One big picture is the easiest way to decorate the wall above the sofa in the living room. Choose an image that suits the hall according to its style: abstraction or bright pop art for modern, landscape for Provence, classical painting for a neoclassical or classic interior.
The minimum width is half the size of the sofa, otherwise it just gets lost on the background of the furniture.
2 equivalent pictures
Place two vertical canvases next to each other to visually stretch the room. If you hang posters on top of each other, the ceiling will also seem higher, but this method is only suitable for narrow walls or placement in niches.
The ideal arrangement of each part can be calculated by the formula: subtract the width of both paintings from the width of the sofa and divide the remainder by 3. Add half the width of the frame to the resulting value. Step back from the edge of the sofa the final number - there should be a hook.
Triptych or 3 separate photos
Triptych - an image divided into 3 parts. To make the modular picture above the corner sofa look harmonious, its width should be ⅔ of the back. Start hanging a triptych from the central sector, placing it clearly in the middle of the sofa. Then back off the same distance left and right and mark the points for the remaining images.
For a triple composition, not only modules are suitable. Place 3 canvases in the same frames, matching each other in style and you're done!
Composition of many paintings
The size of the composition should not exceed ⅔ of the width of the sofa so that it does not seem too small.
You can collect an even number of photographs or posters of the same size and arrange them symmetrically (2-3 rows of 3 pieces, for example) or use different shapes and sizes. The group should be combined correctly in style, color scheme or theme. Examples of groups: painted in oil paints, pictures in black and white or seascapes.
Many different images can be designed in two ways:
- Choose a large central element and randomly arrange smaller ones around it.
- Create a large geometric shape from many parts, aligning them.
Shelf for photographs or paintings
Do not make unnecessary holes in the wall: hang one shelf on which you can put one or two products, or the whole composition. In addition, the shelf can be additionally decorated with memorable souvenirs, figurines, interesting vases and other elements.
Another plus of the shelf is that products can be interchanged, added and removed without harm to repair. Such mobility will be in the hands of those who create a thematic design for the holidays or the seasons.
If the width of the sofa allows, there may be several shelves. But withstand their filling in the same style so that the wall does not look chaotic.
Mirrors
Reflective surfaces visually expand the room, which means that mirrors are a great way to expand space.
Laconic options in classic frames fit apartments full of decorative elements. Mirrors of unusual types and shapes will become an accent and highlight a wall in a calm interior.
Geographic Maps
There are many options for the implementation of this idea: one large canvas on a stretcher or without, modular from 3-4 sections, in the form of continents.
The panel can be made of vinyl, cork panel, plexiglass with backlight. You can also simply draw a map on the wall or stick a photo wallpaper with its image.
Each style has its own map of the world. Ancient for classics and country, cork for scandy, modern with illumination for a modernist style.
Carpet or tapestry
The carpet on the wall will not look like a relic of the past, if you consciously approach his choice. To design the wall in the living room behind the sofa, take a look at thin tapestries, picture carpets, models with an unusual pile or ethnic pattern.
The width of such a cozy decoration should be slightly less than the sofa. If the drawing allows you to turn the carpet over, designers recommend hanging it upright. This technique looks fresh and visually raises the ceilings.
Fixtures
Most often, sconces are combined with other wall decorations, but this is not necessary on an accent wall. If the sconces themselves look like an object of art, they can also act as independent decor.
It is not necessary to hang only 2 lamps, let them be 3 or more - the main thing is to arrange the wall harmoniously.
Clock
Embed the watch in a composition with family photos or lamps or place them separately. In the second case, their size should correspond to ½ the width of the sofa.
For a loft-style living room, take a stylish metal watch, for a classic - models with a restrained European wooden design, for modernity - contrasting mirrored, for minimalism - white.
Houseplants
Living decorations will refresh the room and become the highlight of the decor. Hang the macrame planters in the country style living room. Or arrange a modern wall stand if you like the Scandinavian style.
You can also decorate the wall in the living room above the sofa with hanging pots, a cache-pot on the shelves or create a phytowall. The last option looks like flowers are growing directly from the wall.
Shelves or cabinets
This is an option for small interiors where it is important to use all available space functionally. However, even furniture can decorate a room.
Place open wide shelves above the sofa, decorate them with books, vases, boxes with the necessary things and indoor flowers.
To prevent regular cleaning of the shelves, replace them with enclosed modules. You can give them a decorative look due to colored, textured or glass facades.
Interior stickers
Stickers are affordable, come in for every taste and color and cope with the task of decorating the wall above the sofa for five plus.
Black stickers are versatile and suitable for almost any environment.Mirrored rooms enlarge the room, but they will look harmoniously only in modernism, minimalism and other modern directions. Select a color sticker not only in style but also in color: it should become part of the space, and not look like a color spot.
Textured wall
You can decorate the wall above the sofa not only after repair, but also during it. Design your accent wall initially and you don’t have to spend money on accessories.
In addition to standard finishing materials in the form of brickwork, stone, decorative plaster or concrete, you can use wood or soft panels.
The classic room can be decorated with molding frames. They divide the space into zones and look original. Wallpaper is glued into such frames, pictures are placed or left free.
Photowall-paper
With this method, you will achieve the desired result and not spend a lot of money. Above the sofa in the living room landscapes, panoramas, abstractions look great. If you do not want to spend a lot of energy on a textured wall (brick, concrete), choose a photo wallpaper with its imitation.
For a small room, discard images with close-ups or 3D effects, as well as dark shades. A natural landscape on a scale of 1: 1, which does not visually stand out from other walls, will be just right.
