Rules for self-sticking non-woven wallpaper
The pasting technique involves the application of generally accepted norms and rules. In addition, it is necessary to take into account the characteristics of non-woven decorative materials. They are wider than paper, and are more massive. All you need to know so that the non-woven fabric does not swell, and the pattern has been preserved, is:
- Before pasting the walls, putty should be putty (if the panels are uneven) and primed.
- The direction of the figure is indicated on the packaging using special characters.
- Alignment of the pattern along the edges is carried out in accordance with the instructions (straight line - all strips are glued in one direction; reverse - in the opposite).
- Non-woven fragments are pressed against the wall from top to bottom, smoothed out with a dry cloth, joints are rolled with a special rubber roller.
- Glue needs to be smeared on the wall. Flizelin allows not to apply it on the back side of the canvas base.
- The technology involves gluing strips without seams (butt to butt, no overlap).
The temperature in the building should be constant during drying. The heavy weight of the non-woven finishing materials requires that the adhesive have the appropriate thickness and viscosity. Wallpaper does not frown if, after gluing, the surface is smoothed using rollers or clean rags.
What wallpaper glue is better to choose for non-woven wallpaper?
As the basis of wallpaper in the manufacture of paper used, which allows the use of starch-containing compounds. You can glue with PVA glue or specialized mixtures. If they contain polymer components, then on a drywall or cork such wallpaper can be glued without puttying. Now mixtures are sold that include antibacterial additives that prevent mold and mildew from appearing.
This problem is solved by a primer. Before gluing, you need to take into account the thickness, dimensions and weight of the strips. If we are talking about massive non-woven wallpaper, then a thick (viscous) solution is used for gluing. Lungs can be glued onto a liquid. If the surface of the wall has not putty shells, glue with an increased density is used. The recipe is indicated in the instructions for use.
What tools will be needed?
It should be prepared in advance. It will take inventory and tools. Before you start working with non-woven materials, you need to think about what glue to glue, and what you need for this. The process cannot be completed successfully without:
- wide brushes or rollers for applying adhesive;
- wallpaper knives and a wide spatula for cutting the ends of the strips;
- special equipment (electronic levels, plumb bob or levels);
- containers for glue preparation;
- clean dry rags to smooth the surface of the wallpaper;
- stationery scissors;
- narrow rubber rollers for rolling seams (joints);
- pencils or ballpoint pens for marking.
All of the above should be available. The list does not indicate the tools necessary for preparatory work.
Proper preparation for sticking
General requirements state that before gluing non-woven wallpaper, you must:
- Wash the floor, or even better, lay cellophane on it. This will save cleaning time.
- All wiring outputs are isolated.
- Removing the covers of sockets and switches, the room is de-energized.
- If there is not enough natural light in the room, the “glasses” with sockets of sockets and switches are sealed with masking tape, which is then removed.
All necessary equipment must be in good condition, clean, and preferably new.
How to dilute glue?
Cooking is best done immediately before gluing non-woven wallpaper. Strips of the required length are cut in advance. A dry granular mixture is poured into a dry container. Then it is filled with the required amount of water. In this case, it is necessary to continuously stir the resulting mass until the granules completely dissolve, tracking the consistency.
IMPORTANT! The recipe indicated on the package of wallpaper glue is designed for the whole pack, and it is impractical to dilute the glue in advance. Over time, it thickens. The optimal amount is 4-5 bands.
Surface preparation
Non-woven wallpaper can be glued on:
- concrete panels;
- plastered brick walls;
- plywood or OSB;
- drywall or other prepared surface.
Laminated particleboard surfaces will not work, since such a surface does not absorb glue, and there will not be sufficient adhesion to non-woven elements. It is important to remove the remnants of the previous coating:
- paints;
- decorative plaster;
- dry plaster;
- lime whitewash;
- old wallpaper.
The surface is cleaned of dirt, oil stains and dust, leveled (plastered) and primed. Only after this can you start gluing non-woven wallpaper.
DIY wall sticking algorithm
First, the wall is smeared with glue. The width of the machined surface is greater than the width of the roll. Lubricate with a special soft roller or a wide thick brush. When preparing the strip, take into account the need to adjust the drawing. To glue non-woven wallpaper you need a joint in the joint.
Stage 1: wall layout and layout
The width of the roll is measured from the window, and a vertical strip is drawn along the level or plumb line. This is a guideline so that fragments and joints are even. By marking the wall along the entire length, you can determine the required number of solid strips, which should be cut in advance.
Stage 2: Wallpaper Preparation
If the non-woven wallpaper is glued without pattern matching, the fragments are cut with a small margin in length (5-7 cm more than the ceiling height). When it is necessary to adjust the pattern, the stock is made large by the amount indicated on the packaging of the non-woven wallpaper opposite the corresponding symbol.
Stage 3: gluing
The pasting process starts from the window. When applying fragments, it is necessary to ensure that they are vertical. For this, marking is applied to the wall.
When gluing non-woven wallpaper, only the wall is covered with glue. If the canvas is heavy (vinyl-coated), it may be necessary to apply glue to both the wall and the wallpaper.
Rolling with a roller or smoothing with a rag, press the middle of the strip along the entire length, having previously deployed the wallpaper.
The remaining air and excess glue are driven from the axis to the edges, which are rolled with a narrow special roller for tight adhesion. There should not be overlaps.
Stage 4: final
All protruding parts of the fragment are trimmed with a wallpaper knife. To make the cut even, a wide metal spatula is applied to the cut line. Below you can leave the wallpaper as it is, since after gluing, a baseboard is installed to hide defects.
How to glue in problem areas?
These places include:
- internal and external corners;
- bay windows, arches;
- sections above door and window openings;
- piers for batteries, etc.
To glue non-woven wallpaper in these places, you need to prepare elements in advance that are suitable in shape and size.

Features gluing meter-long wallpaper
There are several factors specific to non-woven wallpaper that is one meter wide:
- Glue is applied only to the wall.
- If mistakes are made, you can remove the fresh canvas, and glue it again.
- It’s hard to do the work alone.
- Flizelin allows you to adjust the joints by smoothing.
Step-by-Step Guide for Ceiling
The process has a number of features. Stripes are laid across the width of the room from window to door. Difficulty can cause the chandelier to be attached, but it can also be solved.
Video instruction
For clarity, before gluing non-woven wallpaper, it is recommended to watch the video. Where it is told about all the technological nuances of the process.
How long do non-woven wallpapers dry?
It all depends on the temperature in the room. The higher it is, the longer it will take to dry completely. Usually it is 6-10 hours. There should be no drafts at this time.
The gluing procedure is simple, and can be carried out independently, without the involvement of a professional construction team. Non-woven wallpaper is ready for painting, which is a definite plus. The only thing you need for a quality repair is accuracy and the above instructions.
