Selection tips
The function of curtains is not only protection from the penetration of light and other people's views, but also the decoration of the interior. Several recommendations will help to harmoniously fit them into the decor of the bedroom:
- The more compact the room, the fewer accessories should be present in the design of curtains. Lambrequins and multi-layered draperies are appropriate in classicism and baroque, but these styles do not tolerate tight and narrow spaces.
- The density of the fabric is selected depending on the lighting of the bedroom. You can combine air curtains from tulle with thick curtains or use curtains to protect from the sun - so we get several options for window decor.
- Curtains actively accumulate dust, so in order to avoid allergies it is better to choose models that are easy to care for.
What fabric to choose?
The modern market offers products from natural and synthetic fabrics that have both advantages and disadvantages.
Natural Curtains look expensive and respectable in accordance with their price, but it is worth choosing specially processed fabrics with protection against burnout. Cotton, chintz and linen have a recognizable texture and look environmentally friendly, but if sunlight is constantly affecting them, the curtains should be lined. Silk and velvet will look great in a classic style, but these materials require special care.
Synthetic fabrics (viscose, taffeta, organza) often look no worse than natural analogues. It is easier to care for them, the material does not deform during washing, almost does not fade. Polyester with the addition of cotton is particularly practical: such products are durable, have an external appeal, and are easy to wash.
Those curtains that we see in stores can play differently in the home bedroom interior. Some sellers make a move and give a piece of fabric on bail so that the buyer can "try on" the product for his window. When sewing curtains, you should use this service.
How to choose a color?
Recently, specialists often use the technique of “enveloping” in design - when walls, furniture and curtains are chosen in the same tone, but the atmosphere is diluted with contrasting accents. To some, this technique may seem boring, but the growing popularity of "plain" bedroom interiors speaks in favor of this trend.
Nevertheless, most designers are advised to choose the color of the curtains, which would resonate with a bedspread, pillows, furniture or carpet. To do this, we recall the rule of three colors: the background is a neutral shade and it should be more than an additional and accent. The color of the curtains is often used as an additional color, but if you want to focus on the window, you should hang bright curtains or use curtains with a contrasting pattern.
It is important to take into account the cardinal points: the southern bedroom, flooded with the sun, is best designed in cold tones (white, blue, blue) to visually cool the room. But the room on the north side should look more comfortable due to the warm range: curtains of sand, brown, orange and burgundy shades will help to "warm" the room.
We select the size of the curtains
Measurement begins with a cornice: you need to know exactly where it will hang. Standard curtains should have a length equal to the distance from the cornice to the floor minus 2 cm. To get elongated curtains, add from 20 to 40 cm. Short the curtains should have a length equal to the distance from the cornice to the edge of the window sill. Also, the size of the curtains depends on the type of fastener.
The size of the curtains is also affected by their splendor. It determines the number of folds by the width of the canvas. To calculate the width of the curtains, it is worth considering the density of the material. For heavy fabrics, we multiply the length of the cornice by 2, for medium-density canvases, the fluff factor will be 2.5, and for light translucent fabrics - 3.
For a small bedroom, it is worth choosing laconic curtains so as not to overload the space of a small area. But in the end, the size and splendor of the curtains depends on the preferences of the owner of the apartment and the design idea.
Which model of curtains is better?
To choose curtains for a bedroom, first of all it is necessary to rely on the chosen style. Massive, multi-tiered curtains will not fit into the modern interior, but they will perfectly emphasize the rich decoration of the classic style. The same applies to Austrian and French curtains with lush folds, similar to the hem of a ball gown. There are laconic cotton models that look less pompous - in a cage or a vertical strip; if desired, they can be entered in the style of Provence or country.
The popular modern styles - Scandinavian, loft, minimalism - harmoniously fit simple functional curtains without drawings and patterns, but this does not mean that the bedroom should be strict and monotonous. Today, it is fashionable to use several types of fabrics in window decoration, as well as geometric ornaments.
If the room is decorated without frills, it is worth using Roman or roller blinds, which are more of a utilitarian function, without attracting attention. They are also appropriate in small bedrooms and where the furniture is by the window. A more practical option for decorating a window opening is jalousie - if necessary, well block the flow of sunlight.
Which curtain rod is suitable?
In order to choose a cornice, it is necessary to take into account the type of fasteners and the shape of the window opening.
Curtain on rings or loops involves the use of round cornices. Baguette products with a strap that covers the guides and hooks will suit the classic interior. Profile ceiling models made of plastic are the most practical option for modern interiors. They hide fasteners and can bend in accordance with the shape of the wall, which is especially true for bay windows or panoramic windows. For bedrooms with low ceilings, you should choose a hidden ledge.
Rail constructions, which are located on the wall, and combined ones for different types of curtains are also convenient. For blinds and roller blinds, you need to choose special types of fasteners.
We take into account the design, decoration and style of the bedroom
How to choose curtains, focusing on decoration? If the walls are painted in the same color, we select the material a few tones lighter or darker. You can play on contrasts using opposite shades: this is a suitable option for modern interiors or children's rooms.
If there are wallpapers on the walls, a small print on them will help in choosing curtains: a plain fabric, the color of which is taken from the picture, and not the general background of the wallpaper, will look harmonious and stylish.
The combination of curtains with textiles is considered a traditional option: bedspread, plaid, pillows. You can also focus on the floor: the carpet that adorns it can be combined with curtains with a pattern or shade.
And here is the solution for the economical: curtains can overlap with the color of furniture - beds, sofas or armchairs. But if the upholstery has a catchy ornament, it is worth choosing a plain fabric for curtains, otherwise it will ripple in the eyes from the abundance of patterns.
