What is cullet?
Cullet - decoration material for walls, consisting of impregnated fiberglass. The surface has a relief pattern. Glass cloth wallpaper is made from glass blanks that melt at high temperature and stretch the fibers. Threads are subsequently created from them, and after the canvas or fiberglass weaving. Later, the surface is coated with impregnation for the stability of the material.
Composition
Fiberglass wallpaper consists of natural materials: soda, clay, limestone, quartz sand. To transform from billets to fiberglass, only a high temperature of up to 1200 degrees is required. The basis of the impregnation, which is applied at the end of the work for the durability of the material, is modified starch.

Types of fiberglass wallpaper
According to the invoice
Cullets have two main varieties in texture, smooth and embossed. Different types of wallpapers can perform different functions.
Smooth
Smooth fiberglass wallpaper is otherwise called a cobweb or fiberglass. This is due to visual similarities. In addition to the aesthetic function, smooth cullets also perform practical ones, namely they are used to strengthen and level walls or ceilings. Smooth cullets will be a good option for finishing the ceiling, the surface is smooth and even.
Embossed
Another name is traditional cullet. Material with a higher density compared to smooth wallpaper. The surface has a pronounced relief, forming some kind of ornament or pattern. This type of fiberglass wallpaper is suitable for final wall decoration.
Gunny
The type of texture is called a fabric, which is distinguished by a unique and recognizable way of weaving threads; visually, the surface of the glass wall looks like a fabric cloth. Weaving can be small, medium and large.
Rhombus
The weaving of the fiberglass fabric forms a diamond-shaped pattern along the entire length of the fabric. A drawing can be with equal or different size figures. Rhombuses also distinguish between large, medium and small. Visually, the wall covering is similar to jacquard.
Herringbone
Fiberglass fabric has a zigzag pattern along the entire length. Like other types, the picture may have a different size. Small ornament is suitable for decoration of small rooms, such as a corridor.
Under the order
Today, in addition to the usual patterns, glass wallpapers are also made with other patterns; in production, you can also make an individual order for a unique weaving according to an individual sketch.
By quality
The quality of glass is dependent on their density, the higher it is, the stronger the material and the longer the service life.
1 class | The most durable coating of this type of wallpaper. Service life an average of 30 years. The density of cullet is more than 100 grams per sq.m. The canvas is ready for repeated repainting, without loss of appearance. |
---|---|
2nd grade | The density of the fiberglass cloth is less than 100 grams per sq.m. Cullets have a shorter service life. A good option for budget repairs. When re-stained, the pattern becomes clogged and the texture becomes less noticeable. |
Economy | Often there are defects in production. Material with low density and, accordingly, quality. |
By color
For painting
Fiberglass wallpaper for painting is made in a neutral color, most often it is white or beige. Such a background allows you to apply any shade to the surface without distorting it.
Colored
Colored fiberglass wallpaper is not intended for painting, paint is added during production. This type of decoration is suitable for a room that does not require regular updates.
Water resistance
When manufacturing on rolls or packaging, the degree of water resistance of fiberglass wallpaper is indicated. The designation is in the form of waves. The more waves, the higher the water resistance of the material.
1 wave
Cullet poorly contact with water. The surface can be washed with a slightly damp soft cloth or chamois.
2 waves
Designate an average degree of moisture resistance of a fiberglass cloth, the material better tolerates contact with water. The surface can be washed with a rag or soft sponge and water or soapy water.
3 waves
The three-wave icon indicates a high degree of moisture resistance of glass. When leaving, the use of non-abrasive detergents is allowed.
Pros and cons
Like any material, fiberglass wallpaper has several advantages and disadvantages over other finishing materials. Given all the nuances, you can easily decide on the relevance of this type of wallpaper for a particular room.

Anti-vandal qualities | Fiberglass wallpaper is difficult to remove, since the impregnation is firmly connected to the glue. |

How to glue on the walls?
Which glue to choose?
For fiberglass wallpaper, it is necessary to use special glue, liquids for ordinary paper wallpaper will not work, they simply will be ineffective, as they will not withstand the weight of the glass. Today in the construction industry there is a large selection of glue designed for gluing glass from a number of manufacturers, such as Oscar, Quelyd or Kleo. Their composition takes into account the features of fiberglass material, the mixture can be purchased in finished or dry form.
What surface is better to glue on?
Cullets need to be glued to the prepared surface. To do this, remove the old finish and smooth the walls with putty, small irregularities can not be removed. The walls are sanded and primed. After that, the surface is ready for decoration.
How much do they dry?
Cullets dry in average day - two. In this case, the room should have a temperature of 10 to 25 degrees. It is also necessary to exclude the possibility of drafts or bright sunlight.
Wall preparation
Before starting to start gluing fiberglass material, it is necessary to prepare the working surface.
- Remove old finish,
- smooth the surface with putty,
- drywall joints or small cracks to seal with a paint net,
- to sand
- primed with a roller,
- after complete drying, the walls are ready for gluing glass.
Sticking technology
Before starting work, it is necessary to mark and prepare the glue. The markup will help to smoothly stick the wallpaper without blocking the side. To do this, draw a line perpendicular to the ceiling, which is measured using a plumb line or level. The glue will be ready 15 minutes after kneading.
- It is necessary to adhere to safety measures, namely to wear safety glasses and mittens.
- Wallpaper begins to glue from the door. Glue is applied to the wall, protruding beyond the edges of the mark.
- In the direction from top to bottom, a sheet of cullet is applied and smoothed with a plastic spatula.
- Following the same principle, the next sheet is glued butt.
- Joints are pressed and smoothed last.
- After 24-48 hours, the wallpaper will dry and will be ready for painting, if necessary.

Features of use on the ceiling
Sticking of glass is carried out according to the same principle as on the walls. Self-adhesive tape will help to check the strength of the old plaster on the ceiling.
- The direction starts from the window to the opposite wall.
- Glue is used only specifically for cullet, the other can not withstand their weight.
- Glue is applied only to the ceiling.
- You need to act sequentially, the next strip of glue is smeared after the sheet of wallpaper is glued.
- Sticking is done end-to-end, with an overlap on the walls.
- Surplus is cut off after drying.
How to paint?
What paint to choose?
For painting fiberglass coatings, water-dispersion paint is best suited. The choice is due to the absence of toxic substances, quick drying and the absence of unpleasant odors. Depending on the type of room, you can choose acrylic, butadiene-styrene or latex-based paint.
Step by step paint instruction
Painting glass has a simple procedure. However, its strict adherence helps to achieve an ideal result.
- Room and tool preparation. Seal the floor, radiators and baseboards with film or newspaper.
- The walls are primed, after which you need to wait until it dries completely,
- the corners of the room are painted with a brush,
- the walls are painted with a roller,
- for even application, breaks should be avoided. Paint applied to an already dried surface will be visible at the border.
- A second coat is applied after 12 hours.

How to choose glass?
Glass cloth wallpapers need to be selected according to some criteria, namely the pattern, manufacturer, class and composition.
- The higher the density of the fiberglass material, the stronger the material and the longer the service life
- fiberglass wallpaper of lower density is not so strong, but have a low cost,
- the pattern is selected depending on personal preferences, it is also possible to make an individual order for a unique pattern,
- the larger the picture, the more times it can be covered with paint,
- the ideal composition is the ratio of 70% glass to 30% impregnation,
- the edges in the roll should be even and the weaving neat.
